Engineering Manager, Cloud Platform – nRF Cloud
Build and scale the backbone of nRF Cloud. Lead talented engineers, shape a critical platform, and help hardware teams monitor, update, and scale devices in production.
About the job
Nordic Semiconductor is looking for an Engineering Manager who thrives at the intersection of people leadership and deep technical ownership to lead our Cloud Platform team.
Our platform gives hardware teams the tools to monitor, debug, and update IoT devices in production. Companies like reMarkable, Whoop, and Ultrahuman rely on it to keep millions of devices reliable in the field, and the results speak for themselves. Customers have reported stats like 10x reductions in return rates, 90% fewer device resets, and doubled engineering productivity. We're an industry leader in enabling hardware teams to ship with confidence and iterate fast after launch.
You will lead a team of platform engineers of unique technical breadth and depth, responsible for the core backend platform underpinning nRF Cloud. You will identify and drive strategic investments across infrastructure, databases, performance, reliability, and security, and ultimately help us scale a successful business.
Key responsibilities
Own the nRF Cloud platform. Rise to the challenge of pragmatically scaling a system that ingests data from millions of IoT devices every day, leading and learning from a team of experts. Drive the reliability, scalability, and performance while optimizing cost and other constraints.
Own your team's productivity and output. You're accountable for what the team delivers. That means proactively identifying blockers, balancing workload, and shaping workflows so people have the information and focus they need.
Build and maintain a healthy team culture. Create a safe, supportive environment where people can do their best work. Set clear expectations, give direct and timely feedback, and foster real collaboration.
Contribute technically. Stay an active technical contributor by participating in architecture design, code reviews, and debugging production issues. Let others write most of the code, but build the intuition to inform pragmatic decision-making.
Define and evolve the cloud platform roadmap. Bias towards action and experimentation, doing the simplest thing that works, shipping it, learning from it, and improving from there.
Champion observability and technical excellence. Build a strong observability culture across the organization. Ensure meaningful metrics, logs, and alerts are in place and that on-call rotations are healthy and sustainable.
Partner cross-functionally. Collaborate with Product, SDK & Field Engineering, Go To Market, and Security teams to align engineering work with customer needs and business goals.
Hire well. When the team is performing, hiring becomes the highest-leverage thing you can do. You'll own the hiring process for your team, from defining roles to closing candidates.
Represent your team across the organization. Communicate up and across clearly. Build relationships with other engineering leads, and make sure your team's work is visible and well understood.
Qualification and skills
Required:
6+ years of software engineering experience, with at least 1 year of engineering management experience.
Proven ability to remain hands-on technically while managing a team. You should be comfortable reviewing code, contributing to architecture decisions, and debugging production systems.
Deep familiarity with AWS, including services such as EKS, RDS, S3, EC2, ECS, and related tooling.
Solid experience with relational databases, especially PostgreSQL, including schema design, query optimization, and operational concerns.
Proficiency in backend programming, with a strong preference for Python, Kotlin, and/or TypeScript.
Strong experience with Kubernetes, including deploying, operating, and scaling production workloads.
Practical experience with observability and monitoring tooling such as Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog, Sentry, or similar, and a track record of improving system reliability.
Strong written and verbal communication. Most of this job is communicating, whether it's giving feedback in a 1:1, aligning teams on technical direction, or presenting a plan to leadership.
Nice to Have:
Background in IoT, developer tools, or embedded systems tooling.
Experience with building device telemetry pipelines, managing OTA update infrastructure, or working with protocols like MQTT or CoAP.
Experience working in an organization going through a significant product integration or platform migration.
Familiarity with ClickHouse or other columnar/analytical databases for high-volume time-series or event data.
Experience owning technical portions of SOC 2 or other compliance processes.
Personal Skills
You lead with care and accountability. You genuinely invest in the people on your team and hold yourself responsible for outcomes.
You think about systems, not just tasks. You look upstream to figure out why things aren't working and fix the root cause, not the symptom.
You default to clarity. You set expectations, create a narrative around the team's work, and make sure people know what good looks like.
You're a strong communicator. You can explain technical decisions to non-technical stakeholders and translate business context into something your team can act on.
You're curious about the domain. You want to understand how IoT devices work, what firmware engineers actually need, and how cloud tooling and AI can make hardware product teams fundamentally more effective.
